Multidisciplinary Research Group on Contemporary Italy (GREPIC)
GREPIC was founded by Marc Lazar in October 1995.
The group follows four main objectives:
- First, to offer the material and intellectual conditions that are necessary for a better understanding of Italy. More than the current “crisis”, our interest lies in understanding what has constituted and what changes the relation to politics in a recently founded country, where the state has a weak legitimacy and that has been through the experience of totalitarianism, in which the relation to democracy has always existed through political parties, and where the economy and society have been through prodigious mutations in less than half a century.
- Second, this approach implies that our research is pluridisciplinary. This means working with political scientists, sociologist, historians, economists, anthropologists, each with their savoir faire, as Jean-Claude Passeron would put it, and all with the will to privilege a global analysis of ongoing phenomena.
- Third, GREPIC gathers both senior academics and PhD students, from France and Italy. Junior academics have the opportunity to present their work in progress.
- Fourth, bring to the surface a French research “hub” on Italy, that would allow for the creation of a French Research Association on Contemporary Italy. GREPIC meets at CERI regularly to take stock of the ongoing research of its members. The group organizes seminars with Italian colleagues as well as conferences. GREPIC has become the reference research group on contemporary Italy in France and in Italy and many Italian researchers are interested in participating. Many publications - in French and Italian - of GREPIC members have first been tested within and in front of the group.
