Surveys & studies

For over 15 years, the DRIS Prospective Mission has been carrying out audience surveys, as well as studies on the use of collections, spaces and services. These surveys enable us to maintain a continuous improvement approach to our service offering.

Most surveys are published on this page. More theoretical publications are posted on the Zenodo account of the ADBU Evaluation and Steering Committee. If you have any questions on these subjects, please contact cecile.touitou@sciencespo.fr.

Surveys on uses and needs

The library has conducted three surveys on the documentary uses and needs of our readers. The first survey was carried out in June 2020 following the upheavals caused by the confinements, closures, and partial reopening. The survey was repeated twice, in December 2020 and March 2023. Focusing on documentary practices and the use of services, this survey enables us to monitor the needs of our users in these areas.

Read a summary in the blog Tribune Compétences Informationnelles (FR).

Focusing on documentary practices and the use of services, this survey enables us to monitor the needs of our users in these areas.

It received 1102 responses in June 2020, 1820 in December 2020 and 1519 responses in March 2023.

Based on the responses received, here is what the library represents:

Section #libqual

LibQUAL+ Survey

LibQUAL+ is a service quality assessment project sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The survey is designed to measure library users’ perceptions of service quality and identify gaps between desired, perceived, and minimum expectations of service.

By participating, The Sciences Po Library can identify where our services meet or indeed exceed expectations, where our services need improvement in the eyes of our users, and can compare our service quality with that of peer institutions in an effort to develop benchmarks and gain an understanding of best practices across institutions.

Memories of 30 Saint-Guillaume

When the 30 rue Saint-Guillaume library closed in November 2021, two student artists, Mathilde Larive and Vincent Neveux, painted a mural inviting library readers to write down their memories (FR).

Surveys archives

Une enquête a été lancée entre le 26 janvier et le 12 février 2023 pour comprendre votre usage et votre satisfaction du service de réservation de places en bibliothèque. Consultez l'infographie qui synthétise les résultats.

Between 2007 and 2022, the Sciences Po library conducted a series of surveys on the use of non-circulating library materials.
It consists in systematically analyzing the materials consulted by readers in the reading rooms during one week.

These repeated analyses enabled us to make a detailed observation of the items consulted, and to observe changes in the use of reading room documentation, as a support (or not) to on-site work.

The results of this work have been posted on the ENSSIB Digital Library. More recent publications are available on request.

A comparative study of campaigns to evaluate the use of open-access collections in the BnF, Bpi and Sciences Po libraries was carried out in 2018 as part of an internship offered by the Bibliothèque nationale de France on disciplines common to and comparable between the three establishments.

Flash survey on the uses of the loan (duration, number of items...) for the students of Paris campus.

77% of Sciences Po teachers believe that images are necessary to ensure their teaching and 44% create their own and specific visuals for their courses.
All disciplines use all types of images. The survey carried out by the Direction des Ressources et de l'Information scientifique and the Direction des Etudes et de l'Innovation Pédagogique allows to know the current pedagogical uses of the image at Sciences Po. It describes the range of services offered by the library as well as its projects.

The Sciences Po Research Library survey, which took place from February 4 to 22, 2013, received 258 responses (24% response rate).

Library survey on users practices and uses, April 7-29 2011
2,371 responses (including 362 on the English form), 15% of which were by mail and 21% active users, 85% Sciences Po users and 15% external users

Opening hours, facilities, construction, accessibility: the Sciences Po Library is always on the move!
Many of the improvements we have made to our services have been inspired by your comments and responses to our surveys.
1,453 students and 222 external users responded to the library’s latest questionnaire, which was available online from March 23 to April 23.

How do you currently use the library? What expectations do you have for the future?
410 faculty and researchers took the online survey from January 25 to March 29.

In January 2008, 2,200 people, 21% of whom were active users, took our online survey on library use.
