From Lucian of Samosate to Jules Verne, the cosmos has excited the imagination for thousands of years. In 1961, the USSR placed the first man in orbit and eight years later the Apollo 11 mission was launched. The Cold War ushered in the era of the conquest of space (marked by massive and strategic commitments by competing superpowers), a conquest whose recent developments raise new techno-scientific, political, economic and legal questions. The cosmos continues to stimulate, but also raises burning questions about international cooperation, the appropriation and exploitation of resources, and, more profoundly, the habitability of the Earth and space.
