10th edition of the ESS survey: the French data are available
Thirty-two countries took part in the 10th round of the ESS survey, which was completed in 2022. In France, the survey ESS10, conducted by CDSP, involved almost 2000 interviews.
Apart from the questions that recur from one round to the next, two modules specific to the 10th edition dealt with the following topics: “Understandings and evaluations of democracy” and “Digital Social Contacts in Work and Family Life”. The French data from this 10th iteration are now available on the new ESS data portal.
Democracy and digital social contacts at the heart of the survey
The subject of the rotating modules in this 10th wave were: Understandings and evaluations of democracy and Digital social contacts in work and family life.
The module on democracy seeks to ascertain what people see as important for democracy in general to work, i.e. what principles and rights should apply and which ones are most important. But it also looks at their views on the operation of democracy and of the different institutions in France today. This module was used in the 6th wave which took place between 2012 and 2013, so it enables a comparison to be made at an interval of around 10 years.
The module on digital communication looks at how comfortable residents of metropolitan France are with digital tools, their views on the potential consequences of these tools, how they communicate with friends and family and within the workplace.
In addition to these rotating modules, every iteration of the survey has questions on the use of the media and on trust between individuals and in institutions, on interest in politics, on subjective well-being and discrimination, as well as on sociodemographic variables.
