The 14th Barometer on the perception of discrimination in youth employment by the Online Rights Commissioner
In December 2021, the 14th Barometer on the perception of discrimination in youth employment was published by the Rights Commissioner, Claire Hédon. The documentation of the database on which this Barometer relies was produced in partnership with CDSP through the National Research Agency funded Upmet project.
The Rights Commissioner’s innovative survey
On December 7, 2021, the Rights Commissioner published the 14th edition of the Barometer on the perception of discrimination in youth employment. Conducted in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in June and July 2021, this survey used a representative sample (IPSOS) of the population of economically active young people between the ages of 18 and 34 (3201 people). The sample was made up using the quota method. The variables chosen were the respondent’s sex, age, region of residence, and occupation.
The survey reveals a strong perception of discrimination among young people, based in part on what they observed when embarking on their working lives. One of the striking results of the survey was that one in every two of the young people in the sample reported witnessing at least one case of discrimination or discriminatory harassment in their workplace.
CDSP’s methodological expertise
CDSP, through the UpMet project (Upscaling metadata for increasing reuse in the social sciences), which was selected in 2019 following the Flash call for “open data” projects (ANR-19 DATA-0009-01), concentrated on the deposit, documentation and dissemination of the survey data.
The outcome of its contribution was to render the data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), and to assist with the recoding of the variables (precise age, weight and raw size, socio-economic category) in order to guarantee the anonymity of the survey subjects and to ensure that the dataset was well documented (input of metadata, description of survey protocol) in order to increase its potential for reuse.
