Background

Yuma Ando has a background in sociology, specifically quantitative sociology, and holds degrees from the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Master’s in Sociology and Statistics), the École Normale Supérieure and the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Économique. During his studies, Yuma conducted research into the socio-economic integration of foreign-born populations in France, using data gathered in public surveys. He joined the CEE as an assistant statistician in December 2020 and now works as a permanent member of the centre’s research support staff.

Responsibilities

There are three main aspects of Yuma’s work at the CEE:

  1. Data processing

As an assistant statistician, Yuma uses his data processing expertise to assist the CEE’s researchers. He provides support at various stages of data processing, depending on the needs and specificities of each research project.

  • Data collection: contributing to data collection by searching and retrieving data from various sources, e.g. open data from public institutions.
  • Data analysis: assisting with data analysis and interpretation of results. Every year, Yuma works as a data analyst and writer on the annual report of the French National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (FR) (CNCDH).
  • Data presentation: formatting data to communicate results effectively, particularly via tables, figures and maps.
  1. Data management

Yuma plays an active role in managing the CEE’s research data (FR). Working closely with the different central Sciences Po departments, he assists in:

  1. Cross-centre collaboration on data-related matters

Yuma acts as a centre liaison in initiatives coordinated across Sciences Po research centres to ensure that the CEE works in concert with the wider university. In particular, he contributes to:

  • METat (FR): a support workshop on research methods within the humanities and social sciences.
  • Metsem (FR): a seminar and discussion group on the many tools and methods used within the humanities and social sciences.
  • the Data Team (FR): a working group and support network for Sciences Po research centres, departments and the Department of Resources and Scientific Information (DRIS) (data.bib@sciencespo.fr).
