SEMINAR OF THE KEY THEMES: "THE STATE AS PRODUCER OF PUBLIC POLICIES" & "STRAINS ON DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATION"
Sciences Po, Room Salle du Conseil, 13 rue de l'Université, 75007 Paris Compulsory Registration
Green transitions involve massive economic and social transformations, implying radical changes in a broad range of public policies. One of the most important challenges that decarbonization strategies face is the need to reconcile ecological and social priorities so as to convert conflicts and trade-offs between potentially competing objectives into coherent and mutually complementary actions. Although the academic and political debate on these topics has been bourgeoning over the last decade, limited empirical knowledge exists about the nature of policy transformations arising from the combination of environmental and social goals. Also, the conceptual underpinnings of extant studies do not allow for capturing the most relevant policy dynamics, including the way in which the different policy instruments can work together in order to increase synergies and avoid negative side effects across the eco-social policy domain. Drawing on the scholarship on policy integration, this seminar will present an ongoing research project dealing with the conceptual, empirical and normative challenges related to the study of eco-social policies.
