ReHousIn - Reducing housing inequalities in the green and digital transition
The project
Housing is one of the most climate-exposed and energy consuming sectors. How will green transition initiatives affect inequalities in the access to adequate and affordable housing? This European comparative research project aims at answering this question to ultimately spark innovative policy solutions towards inclusionary and quality housing.
It is funded by the Horizon Europe programme for a 3-year period (March 2024 -February 2027).
Project objectives
ReHousIn is committed to better understanding the impacts of recent crises (e.g. financial, energy crises) on housing inequalities across different European regions, and the possible impacts of the green transition on access to housing for low- and middle-income people (for instance increased housing costs, ecological gentrification) in various contexts.
The project will conduct a comparative, multilevel analysis in 9 European countries – Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom – by means of a mixed-method project design. A quantitative data analysis on recent trends in housing inequalities and their relation to crises across different levels of urbanisation will provide the framework for 27 comprehensive case studies (one attractive metropolitan region, one middle-sized city and one rural area in each country).
The project will synthesise potential synergies and conflicts between environmental policy instruments (in particular, policies promoting nature-based solutions, energy efficiency and urban densification) and the provision of affordable housing. By engaging with stakeholders and policymakers, it will ultimately develop policy recommendations for mitigating negative social impacts and promoting affordable, sustainable housing at EU, national and local levels.
In addition to conducting 3 case studies in France, Sciences Po’s role in the consortium focuses on studying the effects of EU and national Environmental and Energy Policies (EEPs) on housing inequalities in various regions, and different social groups.
