Biography
Bruno Cousin is a sociologist, affiliated with CEE and the Cities Are Back in Town research group of the Sciences Po Urban School, as well as the holder and scientific director of the Endowed Chair on Cities, Housing & Real Estate.
He has researched and written about transformations and intergroup relations in large metropolises, often focusing on inequality, segregation, and the meaning-making processes associated with upper- and upper-middle-class separatism.
His main works in progress examine economic elites’ practices, strategies and institutions of sociability, analyzing them through both the sociology of social capital – and thus of friendship – and a political economy perspective. He is also a member of the research consortium that has built the World Elite Database and is currently drawing on it.
Before rejoining Sciences Po, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University and was a maître de conférences at the University of Lille. Over the years, he has held visiting positions across Europe and the United States, and is currently an international faculty member in the UrbEur doctoral program at the University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy).
In addition, because – now more than ever – public and civic debate needs to be informed by the social sciences, he serves on the editorial board of La Vie des Idées / Books & Ideas.
