GLOBALCAR (ANR-FAPESP): a transnational research on the economies of stolen vehicles (Europe, Africa and South America). Led by Gabriel Feltran (Brazil) and Sébastien Jacquot (France); with a team of 12 researchers in different countries. Funded by the National Research Agency (ANR) and the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de São Paulo (FAPESP). Cars are at the centre of urban and environmental issues worldwide. Our project investigates the informal, illegal and criminal activities related to used car economies (street mechanics, trade and theft of spare parts, car theft and trafficking, resale of used cars) between Latin America, Europe and Africa. More than an international comparative research, a team of 16 researchers develops a transnational empirical field research on the governance of illegal value chains. We propose ethnographies in Sao Paulo, Port of Santos, Paris, Naples, Dakar, Accra, Abidjan and the Port of Cotonou).

"Marginal connections": illegal markets and the international expansion of Brazilian criminal groups. Led by Gabriel Feltran (CEBRAP) and Fernando Rodrigues (UFAL), with a team of 7 PhD researchers, this project studies the internationalisation of criminal factions from the South-East of Brazil to other regions of the country, in particular the national borders with Bolivia, Paraguay and Colombia, but also ports and airports. The arrival at the borders widens the scale of the circulation of drugs, weapons, contraband and vehicles, consolidating global circuits of illegal economies. Funded by FAPESP/FAPEAL (Brazil).

"Pax Urbana": negotiating homicide reduction in Sao Paulo, Medellin and San Salvador in comparative perspective. Pax urbana" studies the taboo processes of negotiation between the state and criminal groups in the cities of Sao Paulo, Medellin and San Salvador. For years, urban violence in Latin America has been the highest in the world. Most research in this area has focused on understanding the high rates of violence, and much less on why the violence has declined. This project starts with a controversial idea: The only way homicide rates have been significantly reduced in chronically violent urban contexts in Latin America is when the state has negotiated with criminal groups in poor neighbourhoods. [The project had been approved by the AHRC UK, but funding was subsequently withdrawn due to Brexit. The team intends to resubmit the project next year]. PI is Adam Baird (LSE), Gabriel Feltran is Co-I (Cebrap).

"Becoming' or 'getting by': militarization of youth opportunities in times of economic crisis. Andreza De Souza Santos, Director of the Brazilian Studies Programme and Senior Lecturer at the LAC, has been awarded a John Fell Fund grant for her project "Becoming or Getting by: Youth Opportunities in Times of Economic Crisis". In this project, Andreza will work with Dr. Gabriel Feltran (UFSCAR-Brazil) to examine the growing interest of Brazilian youth in military careers and how this renewed interest may be related to a reaction to the expansion of the criminal world and a lack of open positions in other fields. This project adds to Andreza's research on the economic diversification of Brazilian municipalities and Gabriel's long trajectory studying crime and illegal markets in Brazil. The project also advances a collaborative research agenda - Prof. Feltran was a visiting scholar at Oxford University in 2019.

2015 - 2020
1. stolen cars: illegal markets, violence and inequalities' reproduction in Brazil
Led by Gabriel Feltran with a team of 11 field researchers. The research project mapped the (il)legal car market and its mechanisms of production of inequalities and violence, starting from the city of São Paulo. The proposal focuses on: i) the production and reproduction of inequalities in the access to resources by the subjects enrolled in the vehicle market, in particular legal and illegal incomes, in addition to the unequal access to public and private services related to urban and private life; ii) the modes of regulation of the distribution of violence, understood as the use of force, both criminal and state, in particular homicides. 2. Ethnography of crime and violence in Sao Paulo
A team of 25 researchers led by Gabriel Feltran at UFSCar (NaMargem Research Group) and the
Centre for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) has developed numerous individual and collective projects since 2010, until 2018. During this period, the group has produced more than 90 works, including 5 books in the Marginália series of urban studies (University of Sao Carlos Publishing House), among which the edited volume "Novas faces da vida nas ruas" was a finalist for the Jabuti Prize 2017, the most important prize in Brazil. 2014 - 2017
3. The aesthetics of urban conflict and the 'world of crime'. The research project, led by Gabriel Feltran with a team of 12 young researchers, makes the aesthetic production of urban events the central element in the study of contemporary crime. The space analysed is the Rio-São Paulo axis, between 1940 and 2019. Three musical and ethnic aesthetic matrices of the peripheries - black, white and "Nordeste" - are analysed historically, under the key of the expression of urban conflict: samba, black music, brega music, MPB, punk rock, rap, pagoda and funk. The first result of this investigation was the book Vozes à Margem, co-edited by Giordano Bertelli and Gabriel Feltran. A second book is in preparation, resulting from the debates between the latter and his students during the urban sociology courses at UFSCar, since 2015. 4. "Tackling Violence Project (CEM-British Council)
The project had two main axes, complemented by awareness-raising policies, aimed at highlighting the role of illegal markets and poorly targeted security policies in the recent emergence of urban violence in Latin America: 1. Training: "What produces violence?" course, aimed at key audiences related to public security and social protection policies in Sao Paulo. The course presented the most recent research conducted by CEM (USP/CEBRAP), the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), CIESAS / Colégio de Michoacán in Mexico, as well as King's College London and Goldsmiths College (UK). 2. Local action: This involved a series of activities to create a human rights centre in São Carlos-SP and to support community centres for youth rights (CEDECA) in the outlying areas of São Paulo. Led by Gabriel Feltran with a team of 5 people.

The quiet power of city streets: marginalization, everyday practices and urban change in Sao Paulo and
Berlin.
This project was developed on a first stage of collaboration between CEM and Humboldt University, in the framework of the Urbin Urbin collaboration "Urban institutions, Urban inequalities", which addressed how institutions create the conditions for urban citizenship, which determine the space of manoeuvre of city dwellers. The central aim of this project was to develop new insights into Sao Paulo and Berlin on how: a) ordinary residents, living in conditions of marginalisation, encounter livelihoods in the city; b) to what extent these livelihoods challenge dominant practices and norms; and c) quietly living their lives induces unplanned and uncoordinated social and urban change. Directed by Talja Blokland and funded by the German government, after a period as visiting professor at the Department of Sociology (Urban Sociology - 2017), HU Berlin.
2013 - 2016
2. Urban Spaces and Political Informalities
The project was a collaboration between France and Brazil: three Brazilian research centres (Centre for Metropolis Studies, Federal University of Sao Carlos and Federal University of Fluminense) and the French network Inverses, which brought together researchers from the University of Paris I, IRD and the University of Caen. This collaboration produced 5 annual workshops on political informality, illegal markets and the city, within two research projects funded by FIESP (Federation of Industries of the State of Sao Paulo). These collaborations were led by Marie Morelle, Sébastien Jacquot, Jérôme Tadié and Nicolas Bautès.
Enseignements
Gabriel Feltran is currently responsible for a course in the Sociology of Crime at the College of Sciences Po, and a course on Qualitative Research Methods (ethnography) at the Master's of the Research School.
He has a long teaching experience in undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs (sociology of crime and violence, urban sociology, classical sociology, theories of action, ethnography in sociology, qualitative methods, among others)
