Research project pursued at the CEE

The politicisation of globalisation: How are mainstream parties responding to the rise of far-right nationalism?
Two main research questions underpin the project. First, how do mainstream parties articulate national identity in response to the far-right? The project aims to create the first dataset that systematises the study of political rhetoric on national identity in Europe. The dataset will be constructed in a way that can be used independently or as an addition to widely used databases.

Second, what explains mainstream parties’ strategic choices and their variation across time, country and ideology? By running statistical analyses and using process tracing, I will examine different explanatory variables such as party family affiliation, individual attitudes regarding regional, national and international identifications, presence of minority nationalist parties and transnational interactions between parties.

The case studies of the project are France, the UK and Spain and the time frame of the analysis starts with the economic crisis of 2008.
