Visiting PhD Candidate

Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa

NormandinMarie-Soleil Normandin is currently a research assistant for the Konrad Adenauer Research Chair in Empirical Democracy Studies in Ottawa. Her thesis will examine the general tendencies in terms of men’s and women’s voting trajectories in France. More precisely, her thesis will look at the 2022 French presidential and legislative elections in a mixed method approach by using an original dataset. She previously worked at the Université Laval, on the evolution of far-right movements in Canada and Quebec. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., she received a M.A. in Political Science from Université Laval (Qc), and a B.A. in International Relations and French at the University of British Columbia (BC).

Research project pursued at the CEE

During her stay at the CEE, Marie-Soleil Normandin will be conducting qualitative research for her thesis, which focuses on female and male political trajectory to the Rassemblement national. Traditionally considered as a Männerparteien, PRRP have long underrepresented women’s interests and have largely attracted male voters. However, the general tendency for men to have a higher likelihood to vote for these parties applies to most European countries, with the exception of few countries such as France where a narrower gap exists, and where recent findings have seen a reversed trend. Thus, Marie-Soleil Normandin tries to understand if the trajectory to become a RN voter has changed over time or converged as RN voters’ values have.
