Matteo Mandelli
Postdoctoral Researcher - Open Society Hub for the Politics of the Anthropocene
Matteo Mandelli is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics (CEE), where he is working on a project titled “Democracy and Ecological Transformations” under the supervision of Charlotte Halpern and Bruno Palier. This 22-months project is funded under the Open Society Hub for the Politics of the Anthropocene (OHPA), hosted at Central European University (CEU) in Vienna.
He obtained his PhD in Political Studies from the University of Milan in September 2023. Following this, he joined Sciences Po, where he undertook a project within the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public (LIEPP). Over the years, he has collaborated with various European think tanks – including the Green European Foundation, the European Trade Union Institute and the European Social Observatory – and he was visiting scholar at Maynooth University (Ireland) and at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
He is co-founder and board member of the Sustainable Welfare and Eco-social Policy Network. At Sciences Po, he serves as one of the coordinators of the Socio-Ecological Transitions (SET) initiative and he is a member of the steering committee of the Atelier interdisciplinaire de recherches sur l'environnement (AIRE).
Research interests
His primary research interest is the role of the welfare state in addressing the ecological crisis and the green transition, with particular attention to the distributive politics involved. His work has concentrated on defining and identifying eco-social policies and risks, as well as examining related political conflicts and policymaking processes within the European Union and its Member States, overall contributing to the debate on advancing a just transition from the perspective of political studies.
