Nieves Ortega-Pérez

Nieves Ortega Pérez is a Ph.D. in Political Science and Administration and a Tenured Lecturer of Sociology at the University of Granada (Spain), where she teaches courses on Sociology of Migration.

She has been visiting fellow in different foreign research institutions specialized in migration studies, the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (UCSD, USA), the Sussex Centre for Migration Research (University of Sussex, UK), the Unité de Recherche Migrations et Société (Université de Paris 7, France), the Centre de recherche sur l’immigration, l’ethnicité et la citoyenneté (CRIEC)-Université de Québec à Montréal, and the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET, Buenos Aires).

Currently she enjoys a postdoctoral fellowship of the “José Castillejo” Programme granted by the Spanish Ministry for Education to study the immigrants’ political incorporation process in a comparative perspective in Spain and France.

Research Interests

European politics of migration, ethnic mobilization, migrant associative movement, immigrants’ political participation and incorporation, public policies on immigrant integration.

Research project you intend to pursue at the CEE

Under the title of Making immigrants’ political incorporation in the European Union: comparative analysis of actors and opportunity structures in Spain and France (2017 José Castillejo National Program), her project assess how immigrants become part of the politics in the host country and aims at the public institutions as main actors in the making of opportunity structures of non conventional political participation. She has worked on a set of qualitative indicators to generate models of immigrants’ political participation and she intends to verify them in the French case, which ultimately would improve the management and governance and reinforce the democratic processes at the EU members.
