Susana Borrás

Susana Borrás is Professor of innovation and governance at the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Denmark. She has published extensively in international high-ranked journals and publishers. Her most recent book is “Holistic Innovation Policy: Theoretical Foundations, Policy Problems and Instrument Choices” 2019, Oxford University Press, with Charles Edquist.

For almost five years she acted as Head of the Department of Business and Politics at Copenhagen Business School (2011-2016), leading 50 researchers and setting the research and teaching strategy of the Department.

Over the last two decades Susana Borrás has advised governments and institutions at international and national levels on matters of science, technology and innovation policy. Among other, she is currently the member of advisory boards of 5 international scientific journals; of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV), and of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centre for European Studies, Sciences-Po Paris, France. In the past, she was board member of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm (2013-16) ; member of the group of experts who conducted the mid-term evaluation of the EU’s FP7 (2010), which served as a basis for the political discussions that lead to the new EU’s framework, the so-called “Horizon 2020” ; and member of the Danish Research Policy Council, advising the Danish Minister and Parliament (2010-14).

She has a solid teaching experience at all levels of the university system: undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.

Susana Borrás holds a Masters degree (licenciatura) in political science and sociology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain ; and a PhD degree from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy.

Research interests

Susana Borrás conducts research on the interaction between governance and innovation. As a social scientist, her specific research interests are in the field of innovation policy and governance. One of her leading questions is, what governments can do to foster socio-technical innovation in the economy, and how research and innovation policy can be designed to more problem-solving addressing grand challenges. Understanding that governmental action is embedded in a democratic governance context, issues of social legitimacy, policy learning, as well as organizational dynamics are inescapable questions for transformative innovation.

• Scale-up and diffusion processes in digital urban solutions
