EU Leadership in Climate Politics

Europe écologie-Les verts obtained a surprising 13.4% of the votes in the European elections in May 2019. They became the third largest political group in France. Not only in France, but in many EU member states green parties were highly successful. This talk will address the implications of the so called “green wave” for EU leadership in global climate politics. More theoretically speaking, it will be assessed what leadership means and how EU leadership has evolved over time. Finally, we take a look at the European Commission’s “European Green Deal” and its potential to boost EU leadership in the future.
