Bachelor of arts, third year: languages
You are preparing your third year abroad
During your study abroad programme, it is highly recommended to pursue language instruction that you began while at Sciences Po. In addition, it is recommended to reach the highest level possible to meet potential English requirements for admission to certain graduate degrees.
Important: Studying a new foreign language during the third year abroad requires prior authorization from the Sciences Po languages department.
Language tests: Students wishing to study abroad can be required by partner universities to take a language test (IELTS or TOEFL iBT for English-speaking countries), and need to register in time. Some universities in non-English speaking countries that propose instruction in English also require English test results (in Japan, the Scandinavian countries for example).
Students must submit TOEFL / IELTS results at the same time as their application for their third-year study abroad.
No language test is required for an internship.
Take an English test
Sciences Po supports the TOEFL iBT Home Edition certification accepted by most English-speaking universities: the exam is conducted online regardless of the place of residence, without any upfront fees required from the student.
The education provided at Sciences Po prepares for this exam, which is based on the acquisition of the skills assessed.
Two free training tools, accessible to all, are available to students (it is not necessary to have registered for the test to access them).
- The Insiders’ Guide to the TOEFL iBT: an online course (MOOC) available on the EDx platform. This comprehensive course allows candidates to explore the 4 skills of the test and discover all types of questions; it offers examples from past exams.
- The Complete Online TOEFL iBT Free Practice Test: it allows for a practical experience. The first two sessions (Reading/Listening) are corrected and scored; the Speaking/Writing parts are not corrected, but the candidate has access to correction elements.
If it is indicated on the search engine of partner universities that the university to which the student wishes to apply does not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and after confirmation from the geographic heads of the concerned area, it is exceptionally possible to register for another exam and make a request for reimbursement to Sciences Po up to a maximum of 175 euros (within the limit of a single registration fee financing for an English certification by Sciences Po during the entire duration of the studies).
Any request for reimbursement will be conditional on compliance with these terms.
