James Peter Burgess

J. Peter Burgess is a philosopher and political scientist. His research and writing focus on the intersection of culture and politics, particularly in Europe, and more specifically on the theory and ethics of security, insecurity, risk and uncertainty.

He has held positions at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, the European University Institute in Florence, the Center for Security Studies, the Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Sciences Po Paris, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Center for Development and Environment (SUM) at the University of Oslo, and the Neubauer Collegium at the University of Chicago.

His research has been funded by the European Commission, the European Science Foundation, COST, UNESCO, the Research Council of Norway, the Nordic Research Council, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense, the French Embassy in Norway, the French National Research Agency, the Ruhrgassstiftung and the Centro militare di studi strategici (Rome).

He currently heads the ENS-AXA Research Chair in the Geopolitics of Risk, a 10-year research program (2015-2025) that aims to bring together a range of disciplinary approaches to the politics of uncertainty in the age of globalization.
