Research Projects

Most research carried out at the CSO is financed by external funding, which supplements the budget provided by the CNRS and Sciences Po.

Researchers regularly apply for grants as well as to national and European calls for research projects. Direct partnerships and contracts are also developed with public and private organisations interested in collaborating with the centre.

2023

• Demand for Justice before the French Supreme Courts. Judicial Aid, 1850-2000 led by Claire Lemercier (contrat SAB Sciences Po).
• "Social inequalities” in health: agenda-setting and policy tracing from 2004 to the Covid-19 crisis, directed by by Patrick Castel, (CSO) and associated with Thierry Lang, professor emeritus in public health, and William Genieys (CEE).

• Coevolution of Equipment, Digital Technologies and  Agroecological models, managed by Pierre Labarthe (INRAE) et conduit par Sylvain Brunier et Jean-Noël Jouzel
• Demander l’accès à la Cour de cassation ou au Conseil d’État. Étude des dossiers d’aide judiciaire, XXe-XXIe siècles, dirigé par Claire Lemercier et mené par Ana Maria Falconi.

2022

• Telework, trade union organization and practices (TélOrgSynd), directed by Henri Bergeron and Jérôme Pélisse and led by par Sophie Louey, post-doctorante.
  This project focuses on the effects of telework on social dialogue and work collectives based on the actions of trade unionists.
• Expandroit : Expériences pandémiques du droit et de la justice : famille, travail et espace public en urgence sanitaire directed by Jérôme Pelisse and Émilie Biland-Curinier.
  This project in the continuity of the INJUVID contract continues the analysis of the representations and practices of the rights of "ordinary people" in their daily life during the health crisis.

2021

• Immigrants’ career changes in German organizations directed by Philipp Brandt, and his collaborators are Jeremy Kuhnle (University of Trente) and Henning Hillmann and Marcel Kappes (University of Mannheim). This project studies the careers of immigrants in German firms, focusing on the informal strategies that immigrants use to navigate the firms’ internal labor markets and to compensate for existing disadvantages.

• OrA-NEAT (Organization and Attitudes in Nursing homE Antibiotic sTewardship) coordinated by the University of Lorraine and led by Henri Bergeron, Patrick Castel and Etienne Nouguez.
  This project, led by Claire Bodelet, post-doctoral student, concerns the development and evaluation of a customizable program for the proper use of antibiotics adapted to the needs of French EHPADs based on an overall evaluation of organizations and the perceptions of professionals health.
• AVOCONSEILS : Accès à la justice et défense devant les hautes cours. Le rôle des avocats aux conseil- ANR 2021, coordinated by Liora Israël (Maurice Halbwachs Center) and led by Claire Lemercier (CSO) and Laure Blévis (ISP).
  This project focuses on the functioning of high courts and on a distinct profession, that of counsel.
• Conjuguer la perspective de l’effondrement avec l’engagement contestataire. Le cas des « milieux autonomes » européens analysés sous l’angle des temporalités multiples managed by Madeleine Sallustio.
  This research intends to understand how individuals articulate paradoxical temporalities within their projects of living on the margins of the "system", understood as wage labor, pyramidal institutionalization of power relations and unequal and anti-ecological modes of production

• TAXLAW: The Authority of Expertise in Professional Tax Law Practice  managed by Jérôme Pélisse and with the collaboration of Corentin Durand.
  The project aims to define the legal experts’ role in designing tax measures that secure the industrial renewal, the labour market, and pathways to a greener economy.

• INJUVID : Injustices, conflictualités et expériences du droit en urgence sanitaire (in french) - ANR 2021 managed by Émilie Biland-Curinier with Jérôme Pélisse, Fabien Jobard and Aline Dalliere.
  This project will study three significant domains of daily life – public space, family and work – in order to explore the ways in which both individuals and groups negotiate those tensions and disputes which have been exacerbated by measures to impede the spread of COVID-19, such as; lockdowns, curfews, limited access to social services and the institution of new sanitary measures in the workplace.

• TRANSCORP : Transnational Corporations And The Shifting Boundaries Of Justice with Pierre-Louis Choquet under the supervision of Martin Giraudeau. 
  This research aims to advance our understanding of the changing interface between business and society by analyzing the judicialisation of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

• CrisOrg (organizations in crisis)- ANR 2020 sous la direction d'Olivier Borraz et mené avec Henri Bergeron, Patrick Castel, Renaud Crespin, Etienne Nouguez.
  This research aims to study the response of different organizations to the Covid-19 pandemic at the national and local levels and in the healthcare system. 

2020

• Governing distance - Pesticides and residents’ health, from scientific measurement to political measures with Sylvain Brunier & Jean-Noël Jouzel.
  This project aims to shed light on new forms of spatialization of health and environmental risks induced by agricultural activities, based on the case of local residents exposed to pesticide drift.
• Everyday Life in a Pandemic. An international comparative sociological study directed by Dr. Mary Green (Wageningen University) in association with Sophie Dubuisson-Quellier.
  This international comparative sociological study aims to uncover social and cultural differentiation in impacts of the pandemic on citizens’ everyday lives.
• COVID-IN-UNI : French universities facing COVID directed by Christine Musselin and Stéphanie Mignot-Gérard (IRG-UPEC) - ANR 2020
  This project aims at providing novel insights into this topic by observing French universities during the COVID-19 pandemic through the following questions. Do the organizational peculiarities of universities weaken or strengthen them during a crisis? 2: Does the crisis transform university governance and power relations? How do universities arbitrate between health security and the continuation of their institutional strategy?
• Project H2020 HECAT - Disruptive Technologies Supporting Labour Market Decision Making
  The EU-funded HECAT project is developing new technology to support labour market decision-making. It's headed by Didier Demazière and realized by Alizée Delpierre.
• Projet : Le représentant de proximité, une figure au cœur des enjeux de la nouvelle représentation collective des salariés (FR)
  Ce projet, géré au CSO par Jérôme Pélisse et Guillaume Le Lay, s'intéresse à  l'instauration de représentants de proximité suite à l'ordonnance 2017-1386 du 22 septembre 2017.
• Projet« Intermédiaires du droit et parents LGBTQ+ » (FR)
  Ce projet, dirigé par Émilie Biland-Curinier, vise à mieux comprendre les pratiques des professionnel.les du droit et intermédiaires auprès de parents LGBTQ+, ainsi que leurs représentations des droits des personnes issues de la diversité sexuelle et de genre. 
• Project «Marketing practices and ageing populations to avoid financial misselling» (FR)
  Cette étude a pour objet d’observer les pratiques de commercialisation des produits financiers auprès des personnes vieillissantes et de recueillir les savoirs accumulés dans les organisations bancaires. Elle sera coordonnée par Jeanne Lazarus, chargée de recherche au CSO et Sabine Rozier, Maîtresse de conférence à IRISSO, avec l’appui de deux post-doctorants : Clara Deville et Sylvain Thine.
• Project  The legalization of organizational life in france and the united states: tensions between individual rights and the collective good.
  It will be directed by the Professors  Calvin Morrill & Jérôme Pelisse.
• Project UNIFIED "From local diversity to transnational institutionalization: The emergence of the European Unified Patent Court".
  This research is headed by Emmanuel Lazega and with  Heidelberg's University and the Institut de Géographie.
  UNIFIED focuses on the current process of institutional convergence between nationally fragmented IP regimes and the emergence of a genuine transnational institution, the public/private Unified Patent Court.

2019

• Projet POLAL - Les politiques alimentaires en France. Innovation et recompositions de l’action publique (ANR 2019) - FR 
  Ce projet interroge les recompositions de l’action publique contemporaine à partir du cas des politiques alimentaires. Il est dirigé par Sophie Dubuisson-Quellier et il associe plusieurs chercheurs dont Anne-Laure Beaussier et Etienne Nouguez.
• Project « V-CARE » : VolcaniC early awAREness (ANR 2019) - FR
  Ce projet a pour objet la mise au point d’un dispositif d’alerte précoce aux éruptions volcaniques. Il est dirigé par Georges Boudon de l’Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris et avec Olivier Borraz, comme co-responsable scientifique pour le CSO.
• Projet ENDLESS : Enjeux de l’essor du salariat aux portes de l’Europe. Le prisme de Tanger (ANR 2019) - FR
  Cette recherche aborde les mutations contemporaines du travail et de l’emploi considérée à l’échelle mondiale, en s’appuyant sur une région : celle de Tanger au Maroc. Elle est dirigée par Alexandra Bidet, du Centre Maurice Halbwachs (CNRS) et est menée par plusieurs chercheurs dont Gwenaële Rot.
• Projet Analyse sociologique d’Eau de Paris - FR dirigé par Henri Bergeron, Olivier Borraz et Patrick Castel et réalisé par Hadrien Clouet.
  Ce projet consiste à réaliser une étude scientifique des formes de travail et d'échanges dans une organisation complexe, en cours de mutation et engagée dans la transition écologique et numérique.
• Projet  "Des parents dans leurs droits ? Minorités sexuelles et séparations conjugales d’un continent à l’autre" - FR réalisé par Emilie Biland-Curinier.
  Ce projet analyse les expériences des parents non-hétérosexuels qui se séparent ainsi que le travail des avocat·es et des juges
• Projet ICEDRUG - La consommation d’Ice à Tahiti : de quoi est-elle le nom ? Politiques publiques, usages et trafics (FR)
  Ce projet est co-réalisé par Alice Simon et Alice Valiergue et sous la co-direction d'Henri Bergeron.
  Il se propose d’explorer les causes et les conséquences de la croissance de la consommation d’Ice (métamphétamine), mais aussi d’autres produits, et notamment de dérivés de cannabis (en particulier, le Pakalolo), en Polynésie française.
• Projet SURIPI : SUrveillance des RIsques Professionnels Incertains (FR) co-dirigé par Jean-Noël Jouzel et Jérôme Pélisse, en association avec Renaud Crespin, Giovanni Prete, Scarlett Salman et Gladys Lutz (octobre 2016- décembre 2019)
• Projet CATH-CONSO : Le catholicisme, une source d'expertise ? Revisiter les enquêtes de consommation alimentaire dans les Trente Glorieuses (FR).
  Il est dirigé par Thomas Depecker (INRA) avec la collaboration d’Anne Lhuissier (CMH) et Marie-Emmanuelle Chessel (CSO).
  Ce projet vise à explorer les liens méconnus entre diverses pratiques d'enquêtes alimentaires et de consommation des années 1940 aux années 1970.
• Projet EMERGENCE(S): Les réserves des musées de la Ville de Paris. Enquêtes sur les infrastructures de la conservation de l’art et du patrimoine (FR), avec la participation de Léonie Hénaut.
  Il propose d’explorer un terrain particulièrement méconnu, mais au cœur des enjeux de la conservation de l’art et du patrimoine : les réserves des musées.
• Projet CORE 2 : « Les professionnels de la conservation-restauration intervenant sur le patrimoine public : formation, travail, emploi » (FR) sous la responsabilité de Léonie Hénaut (janvier-octobre 2019).
  Ce projet a pour objectif de documenter de façon précise les parcours et la situation socio-économique des professionnels de la conservation-restauration intervenant sur les biens culturels publics relevant des domaines patrimoniaux suivants : archéologie, archives et bibliothèques, monuments historiques, musées.
• Projet SACD : "Etude sur les conditions de travail des scénaristes du cinéma d'animation (enquête qualitative et quantitative)" (FR) réalisée par Maxime Besenval, sous la direction de Gwenaële Rot (janvier-aout 2019).
  La SACD a sollicité le CSO pour réaliser une étude sur les conditions de travail des auteurs de l’animation. Cette enquête sociologique est conduite principalement auprès des auteurs mais aussi auprès d’autres professionnels (producteurs, diffuseurs…).
• Projet ALLIANCE : Experts, expertise et identité professionnelle (FR) réalisé par Léonie Hénaut et Jennifer C. Lena de Columbia University (janvier 2019-décembre 2020)
  Ce projet porte sur les identités professionnelles et la façon dont elles sont affectées par le développement de la nouvelle économie, ou "gig economy", caractérisée par la prolifération de formes d’emploi non-standard et du travail par projets.
