This conference marks the fifth national meeting in Australia for social network analysis researchers and practitioners, and is organised by members of the Australian Network for Social Network Analysis (ANSNA).

ANSNA aims to build greater coordination and collaboration among social network researchers and practitioners in Australia and overseas, raising the profile of Australian social network research. The conference will be held in 25th-27th November 2020 hosted by the University of Western Australia.

Higher Education and State-Building since 1945: Comparative Perspectives

Project rationale:

The close of World War II precipitated a concatenation of academic institution-building worldwide. University expansion was implicated in efforts to repair and strengthen European nation-states; in the dismantlement of European empires; in the geopolitical projects of the twentieth-century Cold War; in the intertwined ideologies of modernization and development; and in the coalescence of a global organizational system some have called world society.

The close of the twentieth century was accompanied by substantial change in national academic regimes in tandem with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the formalization of the European Union, the transnationalization of capital flows, and the digitization of knowledge. Throughout these changes, universities have been spectacularly multifarious civic actors: catalyzing relationships between government, market and philanthropic spheres; fostering social mobility; producing conceptual frameworks and vocabularies of sense-making that are raw materials for state policies, practices, and subjectivities; and providing nodes and templates for distributed collective action across national borders. 

For a special issue of the European Journal of Higher Education, we have commissioned historians, political scientists and sociologists to produce original articles synthesizing the implication of higher education in the evolution of seven states since 1945. All authors (or author-teams) have responded to the same call. The ambition is twofold: (a) accrete a truly transnational scholarly discourse on the role of higher education in post-WWII political and social histories; (b) inform policy debates worldwide about the funding, organizational structure, and mandates of higher education in the twenty-first century.

E-workshop:

In lieu of scheduled conference sessions at the Social Science History Association, the guest editors are convening digitally from 8 - 11 AM PST on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 November per the following schedule. The goal is to provide peer review of draft manuscripts and hone collective themes. We welcome participation from the global academic community. Format: To minimize Zoom fatigue and encourage critical and forward discourse, there will be no paper presentations by authors. Instead, each paper will have a designated discussant who will briefly summarize the paper’s argument and main points and then offer critical commentary intended to improve the work. Tamar Khuchua rejoint le CSO au poste de post-doctorante sur le projet "From local diversity to transnational institutionalization: The emergence of the European Unified Patent Court" dans le cadre d’un appel à projets franco-allemand (FRALL) en sciences humaines et sociales. Il sera dirigé par Emmanuel Lazega en partenariat avec l'Université d’Heidelberg (Institut de Géographie). 

Tamar vient de soutenir sa thèse intitulée "The future of the European patent judicial design in the light of the harmonising role of the CJEU" à l'Université de Strasbourg.

Distanciation sociale, cohésion, et inégalité dans la France de 2020

Le projet CoCo, Faire face au Covid-19. Distanciation sociale, cohésion et inégalité dans la France de 2020 a débuté le 1er avril, grâce à un appel à projet dédié de l'ANR. Il associe des chercheurs et ingénieurs de l'OSC et du CDSP. Dans une perspective d'étude des inégalités et de la cohésion sociale, les chercheurs ont interrogé, via 6 vagues d'enquête entre avril et octobre 2020, un échantillon représentatif de la population française : le panel ELIPSS.

Les chercheurs ont posé des questions récurrentes sur la santé, le moral des ménages, le contexte professionnel et familial, mais aussi des questions plus ponctuelles, notamment sur les mesures prises par les pouvoirs publics. La première d'enquête se situe en période de confinement, mis en place en France dès le 17 mars. A noter que la 6ème enquête menée en octobre est en phase avec la seconde vague de la pandémie. Des données plus anciennes ont aussi été utilisées pour mener des comparaisons longitudinales, le panel ELIPSS existant depuis 2012. 

Un autre volet de l'étude est basé sur des méthodes qualitatives, notamment des entretiens approfondis et des observations.

Ettore Recchi présentera les principaux enseignements sociologiques tirés des 5 premières vagues d'enquête auprès du panel ELIPSS et les perspectives à en tirer pour les mois à venir, qui seront encore soumis à la crise sanitaire. Les différences genrées, les nouvelles formes de travail et de socialité à distance, l'apparition de précarités ou d'exclusion, la place de la santé versus l'état de l'économie ou le sentiment d'inquiétude ou de bien-être seront examinés.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a challenge that is testing our analytical frameworks and conceptual categories. All of our research topics are being subjected to pressures, transformations, and questionings that we will, in time, be able to analyze empirically.

For now, however, it is too early to draw conclusions or to make judgments. Likewise, we cannot yet tell whether our analytical frameworks and conceptual categories are still valid, or if to the contrary they must be reassessed in light of this unprecedented crisis. The singular nature of this crisis will itself be the subject of debate, to draw lessons and propose narratives.

The collection of texts we are creating here aims to formulate venues for future research. The short articles that compose this dossier explore a range of research themes that have long preoccupied us, but also addresses surprises, questions, and hypotheses that have arisen from the current situation. They propose a wide array of frameworks through which we will be able to make sense of things once the crisis is over, sketching out a horizon of research within which we will be able to work together.
