Since September 2019, Alice Simon and Alice Valiergue, post-doctoral fellows at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme du Pacifique, have been working on a project devoted to "the consumption of ice in Tahiti. Public policies, uses and trafficking" under the scientific direction of Henri Bergeron (Sciences-Po - CSO) and Michel Kokoreff (Paris 8-CRESPPA). This study entitled "ICEDRUG" is co-financed by the Ministry of Health and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme du Pacifique (CNRS-UPF).

Research presentation:

Ice is now the most consumed drug in French Polynesia after cannabis. Known to be highly addictive, ice has been a source of great concern for the population and public authorities for several years. In this context, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme du Pacifique (University of French Polynesia and CNRS) and the Ministry of Health of French Polynesia have signed an agreement to carry out a sociological research on the subject. A field survey was conducted among consumers, traffickers and their relatives, but also among the many institutions and associations concerned by this issue. The research analyzes the causes of ice trafficking and consumption as well as the public policies that deal with it. This work explores the causes and consequences of the growth of ice consumption in French Polynesia.
