Portrait of Natalie Bau

Natalie Bau is Professor of Economics at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and holds a joint appointment with the Department of Public Policy. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). Prior to joining UCLA, she held positions at the University of Toronto and the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.

Her work focuses on fundamental drivers of economic growth, such as human capital and productivity, in low-income countries. She is particularly interested in the role of culture and the industrial organization of education markets.  She has published papers in leading economics journals, including the Journal of Political Economy and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. She is a former CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar and a recipient of the Sloan Fellowship.
