Benoît Schmutz-Bloch is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (X) where he holds the Jean Marjoulet Chair and is responsible for the Sustainable Development Chair. He is also a member of the member of the Centre de Recherche en Economie et Statistique (CREST) as well as the Institut des Politiques Publiques (IPP).

He is specialised in urban economics, and its overlaps with public, political, labour and environmental economics. He studies the mechanisms by which urban metropolises facilitate human interactions. In recent years, he has devoted several works to the Yellow Vest movement which has illustrated the importance of socio-economic inequalities between territories.
