Thomas Palfrey is the Flintridge Foundation Professor of Economics and Political Science, Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and was selected as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Economic Theory Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, and a Fellow of the Game Theory Society

He founded the Social Science Experimental Laboratory (SSEL) at Caltech in 1998 and served as the director three times. He later co-founded the California Social Science Experimental Laboratory (CASSEL) at UCLA with David K. Levine, where he served as co-director twice. He also founded the Princeton Laboratory for Experimental Social Science (PLESS) in 2004. And he was the founding Co-Director of the Caltech-MIT Voting Technology Project.

His research spans a range of topics in game theory and its applications to economics, political science, and political economy. His focus is on understanding how people devise strategies when they have incomplete information, combining theoretical, experimental, and empirical analysis. He has applied his research to study elections, committee decision making, auctions, bargaining, public finance, and mechanism design.
