2023 AFSE Annual Congress - June 14-16
In a few days, the Department will have the honour of hosting the Association française de science économique’s (AFSE) 71st annual congress.
The AFSE (French Economic Association) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1950. It aims at promoting the exchange of knowledge and participation of its members in public debates on economic policies. It is open to all economists, whether they work in universities, public research organizations, government bodies or private companies. It also seeks to contribute to the advancement of research in economics in France (and beyond), in all areas, covering a wide range of skills and perspectives. It ensures its dissemination through major scientific events, its annual congress being the apex.
Hosting this event attests to the vision and determination of Sciences Po and of the Department in particular to take a strong foothold in the greater economics research community – what a long way the Department has come since its inception in 2009, in such a short time!

Under the helmsmanship of Jean-Marc Robin, scientific director of the Congress, senior faculty member and former Chair of the Department, this year’s congress will bring together 450 economists and doctoral students from all corners of France – as well as Europe and beyond.
The Congress alternates between moments of general assembly (keynote lectures, awards, lunch sessions) and moments dedicated to specialised study (parallel sessions) over the span of three days.

The Keynote Lectures
Three keynote lectures will illuminate the proceedings of the 2023 Congress, attesting to the pertinence of economics as a discipline for grappling with some of the most pressing issues of the day:
- Emmanuelle Auriol, Professor at the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) and President of the AFSE, will, in her Presidential Address, take on the question of “Women in Economics” from a comparative perspective between Europe and the world. Not only is the question of gender equality an object of research in economics as evidenced by several parallel sessions on the theme, it is also question that is acute to the profession itself: historically women are under-represented. - For the Congress’ Inaugural Lecture, Christian Gollier, Professor and Director of TSE, wonders “How Do We Express Our Responsibility to Future Generations?”, looking at the economic and moral question of how much (if at all) “very distant climate damages should be discounted” in the trade-off with the costs of the ecological transition. - Christian Dustmann, professor at University College London (UCL), founding director of the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) and one of the world’s leading labour economists, will give the Jean-Jacques Laffont Lecture on the question of the “effects of immigration” on people and places. AFSE Awards
Another communal highlight is the AFSE Awards Ceremony. Every year the AFSE honours:
- Doctoral students, by bestowing the Best PhD Thesis Prize and Honourable Mentions: Mathilde Muñoz is the 2023 prize-winner; read more on the AFSE website
- Early career economists, by bestowing the Edmond Malinvaud Prize for the best paper published in a peer-reviewed journal in the past two years. The Department’s own Michele Fioretti is the 2023 Edmond Malinvaud laureate! read more on our website
It also awards a prize for the best French textbook in economics, thus contributing towards the promotion of French economics programmes.
The Lunch Sessions: when the Congress becomes a forum
The Congress also becomes a forum at lunch time, to discuss new (digital) tools for economists and the non-academic job market for economists.
Of note: this year two new lunch sessions have been added to the agenda:
- A roundtable organised by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and an institutional partner of Sciences Po, on the topic of “Energy Shocks, Sovereignty, and Trade Policy”. It will be chaired by Philippe Martin, CEPR Vice President, Dean of the School of Public Affairs, permanent faculty member at the Department (and former Head).
- A roundtable, with a Q&A, on “Women in Economics” (WinE) to present the AFSE’s WinE Committee and discuss a young researchers’ initiative (WEPS) and mentoring programme.
The Parallel Sessions: regular sessions, invited sessions, and our summer workshops
The nine, specialised series of “parallel sessions” will give the 450 participants at the Congress the opportunity to study and discuss over 380 papers representative of the latest research in the mainstay fields of economics as well as in emerging fields and areas of study - micro, macro, environment, covid, economic history, public policy, econometrics, migration, development, etc.
For economists familiar with the Department’s annual events, and notably our Summer Workshops in Economics we traditionally host in June, please note that we have integrated these workshops - and then some! - in the shape of special “invited sessions”.
These "invited sessions" are open to all participants just as the regular parallel sessions!
