Makoto NIREI is visiting Professor of Economics, on leave from the University of Tokyo. Prior to joining the University of Tokyo, he was the Chief Economist of the Japanese Ministry of Finance's Policy Research Institute, where he remains today a Senior Research Fellow. Also policy-related, he is a Member of the German-Japanese Energy Transition Council since 2021. He is affiliated to the Japanese Economic Association, the Econometric Society, and the American Economic Association.

His fields of interest span macroeconomics, business cycles, financial fluctuations, income inequality, innovation, and complex systems.

Portrait of Niklas Schoch

Niklas Schoch is a PhD candidate in Economics at the Department working on a thesis entitled Commitment in Uncertain Times: Investment Decisions, Price Volatility, and the EU ETS, under the supervision of Johannes Boehm. He is a 2024 recipient of the Columbia Alliance Programme's doctoral mobility grant.

He is interested in the interplay of climate policy interventions and firms’ technology choices.

He will also present a paper at our next Friday Seminar on the topic:
