Kiel-CEPR Conference on Geoeconomics - Oct 17 and 18th

Geoeconomics is reshaping global power dynamics, as nations use economic policies to assert influence in an increasingly fractured world, and geopolitical dynamics are prompting Europe to confront new economic and security challenges.

The Kiel-CEPR Conference on Geoeconomics is quickly becoming a premier international event.

The 3rd edition of the conference, organised by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, hosted at and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, will bring together world-leading scholars and political decision-makers to foster intellectual exchange about the link between economics and geopolitics at the highest level.

Moritz Schularick, Professor of Economics at the Department and President of the Kiel Institute, is co-organising  the event with Christoph Trebesch (Kiel Institute, Kiel University). Sciences Po’s Department of Economics is pleased to be associated as conference partner this year – and we look forward to hosting it in 2025!

Highlights of this year's conference:

  • The German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck will speak on the topic of the new economics of European security.
  • Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Professor of Economics at U.C. Berkeley, will give a keynote speech on Changing Global Linkages: A New Cold War?
  • The Kiel Institute's 2024 Bernhard Harms Prize will be awarded to Hélène Rey, Lord Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School for her outstanding work in international macroeconomics and finance.
  • The Excellence Awards in Global Economic Affairs will also be presented at the conference.
