Thomas Chaney (USC)

Visiting Faculty

Thomas CHANEY is the John Elliott Chair in Economics and Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to joining USC, he was permanent faculty member at the Department and remains affiliated to us. He is also a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research as well as of the CESifo Research Network, and a member of the Council of the European Economic Association. Among his editorial duties, he is the Joint Managing Editor of the Review of Economics Studies since 2019.

His research focuses on international trade. He has studied the role of trade in the emergence of ancient cities in the Bronze Age, the role of production networks in shaping the patterns of international trade, and the importance of circulation of ancient coins in fostering trade and economic growth in the Ancient Mediterranean. He is the recipient of a number of awards both for teaching and for research. In early years he received the Kenen Fellowship at Princeton University (2008-2009), the Robert M. Solow Prize for Graduate Student Excellence (MIT 2005), and he was invited to the Review of Economics Studies European Tour (2005). His went on to receive two prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants - a Starting Grant and an ongoing Advanced Grant (while at Sciences Po). In 2024 he was elected Fellow of the Econometric Society.
