Dual Master's Degree with the Hertie School in Berlin
Two-Year Dual-Degree
Programme in English and French
France & Germany
This two-year programme, built on the complementary approaches of two prestigious members of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN), combines the study of economics, public policy and management. It is designed for young professionals who want to gain an expertise in the management and evaluation of public policy in the European context and at the heart of two major European capitals.
Students follow first-year courses at the Master in Public Policy at Sciences Po and second-year courses at the Master of Public Policy at the Hertie School. Upon successful completion of the two years, students receive 2 degrees: the Master of Public Policy from Sciences Po and the Master of Public Policy from Hertie. Please note that students enrolled in this dual degree are not permitted to take a gap year.
First year at Sciences Po
Dual degree students are required to take the regular curriculum course load of a continuing Sciences Po student during the first year. The curriculum is built around a thorough core module in public economics, public policy, quantitative analysis and evaluation of public policy.
During the first year at Sciences Po, students must also select a policy stream. The School offers multiple policy streams and dual degree students are encouraged to choose the policy stream that best aligns with their professional project and their second-year concentration at Hertie.
The curriculum also includes a multitude of electives that examine current policy debates with insights from academics and practitioners. These courses provide students with the opportunity to explore new policy areas and new approaches.
Second year at Hertie School
Dual degree students follow the same curriculum structure as regular Master of Public Policy (MPP) students in their second year at Hertie. They can choose to specialize in one of two concentrations: Policy Analysis or Governance and Leadership and deepen their knowledge by attending four additional portfolio electives.
At the end of their first semester at Hertie, students start to work on a master's thesis project, supported by a colloquium taught by a thesis advisor, a core faculty member. The master's thesis results in a written paper of about 12,000 words that is submitted at the end of the students' second semester at Hertie.
Please note that students need to complete a mandatory six week full-time internship in a policy-related field and at least 130 ECTS (in two years of study) in order to be awarded the Sciences Po Master in Public Policy degree and the Hertie School Master of Public Policy degree.
