Bozzo-Rey, Malik

Lecturer in Economic Ethics and Management Philosophy in the Ethics Department at the Université Catholique de Lille and Director of the Centre "Ethics, Economics, Business" (C3E), Malik Bozzo-Rey is a research fellow at the Sciences Po Law School, Honorary Research Associate in the Bentham Project of the University College London and associate researcher at the European School of Political and Social Sciences.

Having earned his post-doctorate at the Centre Bentham, where he has been a member since its creation through the ANR BenthamPol project, he now teaches at the Université Catholique de Lille, the Université Paris 1 – Panthéon – Sorbonne as well as at the IAE Gustave Eiffel and the EDHEC School of Management.

As a founding member of the research group PriMaL (Paris Research in Norms, Management and Law de l'Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense) and member of the Observatory for Responsible Innovation (Mines Paris Tech), participant in the project PoLiTic : transparence et gouvernance (Maison des sciences de l'homme de Bretagne, director : Magali Bessonne) and NeoPoVis (Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense), his works involve political philosophy in liberalism; democracy, and inter-normative questions.

Joint-chief editor of the Revue d'études benthamiennes (2006-2009) and member of the editorial committee of the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, he is also charged with maintenance of the site of the Centre Bentham and its various training sites (Colloque Bentham juriste et Colloque Deux siècles d'utilitarisme). In 2009, he obtained a British Academy Visiting Fellowship for the Bentham Project of the University College London allowing him to transcribe Bentham's French manuscripts entitled Projet Forme.

His research analyzes the political and legal thought of Jeremy Bentham in constant dialogue between Anglo-Saxon, French and German philosophical traditions, both classical and contemporary. In this way, studies of Benthamian thought may be considered a matrix of broader reflection, relevant to current political and legal philosophy issues. His works further the subject of his thesis, defended in 2007, which treats "The statute of the principle of utility in the political and legal philosophy of Jeremy Bentham" followed by the translation of Of Laws in General (director: Didier Deleule, Very honorable mention with unanimous congratulations from the jury).

His works notably explore questions of interpretation and drafting of laws and codes; the place of logic and language in the formation of legal discourse; legal logic; the statute of norms; conditions of the possibility of the construction of a general legal theory; the links between naturalism, legal positivism, normativism, contractualism and realism; the methods of practical reasoning; the links between ethics and law; international law; sovereignty; justice; methods of political decision making; theories in public policy.

Currently, he is developing a new axe of research aiming to unite law, management and philosophy through the question of norms and relations between the government and the individual and the market and also between the political and administrative functions of government. This integrates his reflections on liberalism. In this area, he focuses on questions of governance and corporate social responsibility, which adds a new dimension: that of ethics through the notion of responsibility and the consideration of the company as a moral agent.

Resolutely involved internationally and interdisciplinarily, he founded E-nous (European Network of Utilitarian Scholars) with Manuel Escamilla (Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Universidad de Grenada, Spain, and vice-president of the Sociedad Iberoamericana de Estudios Utilitaristas).
