2024 Competencia Internacional de Arbitraje: A rigorous preparation process and a unique experience

Nellie Wagner, Satine Berton, Ana Candau Rodríguez and Laura Bravo Cabanes

Laura Bravo Cabanes, Satine Berton, Ana Candau Rodríguez and Nellie Wagner, students at the Sciences Po Law School, took part in the 17th edition of the Competencia Internacional de Arbitraje. They share their experiences with us.

What motivated you to participate in the 2024 International Arbitration Moot Competition?

The MOOT CIA is an excellent way to take a first step into the world of international arbitration. It offers a unique learning experience that goes beyond traditional classroom settings. Additionally, it provides invaluable networking opportunities with professionals and peers from numerous countries. It’s a chance to challenge yourself while expanding your knowledge in a hands-on, dynamic way.

Engaging in discussions with lawyers and law students from all over Latin America expands your professional horizons, allowing you to think of the legal profession from alternative perspectives and broadening your career possibilities.

How did you prepare for the competition?

We began our preparation by delving into fundamental arbitration concepts and building a strong theoretical foundation before diving into the specifics of the case. This initial phase was crucial, as it set the stage for a deeper understanding of the legal principles we would later apply.

The next step in our preparation involved drafting two comprehensive memorandums—one for the claimant and one for the respondent. This task demanded meticulous research, precise legal argumentation, and countless hours of editing. Each memorandum underwent several revisions, requiring us to meet regularly to discuss strategy and refine our arguments.

After the written submissions were completed, we shifted our focus to the oral rounds. This stage tested not only our knowledge of the case but also our ability to think on our feet and respond persuasively to the tribunal's questions. The preparation was intense, requiring us to practice continuously, refine our presentation skills, and anticipate opposing arguments.

During the oral preparation, we held training sessions with teams from all over Latin America and participated in “pre-moots” that gave us a preview of what the real moot was going to be like.

In sum, the preparation process was rigorous and demanding, but it provided invaluable experience in both written and oral advocacy, essential for success in arbitration.

What was the selection process like?

The selection process began with submitting a CV and a motivation letter, followed by an interview to assess our interest and commitment.

What advice would you give to students interested in participating in the next edition of the moot?

If you have an interest in international arbitration, this is one of the best ways to dive deeper into the field and learn from it. However, be prepared to make sacrifices, as the workload is significant. That said, it’s definitely worth the effort. Always keep a strong team spirit in mind!

Another advice given to students next year is to actively engage in discussions with students and lawyers participating in the moot court. Participation in the events that are proposed by the Organization of the Competencia is heavily encouraged. These kinds of events allow you to meet people with whom you will potentially keep in contact later and explore new opportunities.

Beyond this, from a human point of view, having the chance to meet people with similar interests to yours coming from the other corner of the world is a sole and unique opportunity for you: Competencia may become one of the best personal experiences of your life!
