Meet Renato Beneduzi, Senior Visiting Fellow at Sciences Po Law School
Renato Beneduzi, Professor of Civil Procedure and Roman Law at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RIO) has joined Sciences Po Law School for a visiting stay (September 2024 - June 2025).
He tells us about his experience and first impressions since joining the Law School's Research Centre.
My name is Renato Beneduzi, and I am a Brazilian — like literally millions of others in my country — of Italian descent. I teach Civil Procedure, Arbitration, and Roman Law at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. I am also an arbitrator, and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
Throughout my career, I have always been interested in the history of legal transfers and in Rezeptionsgeschichte more broadly. I have explored this topic in many of my books and articles, such as in my PhD thesis, Actio und Klagrecht bei Theodor Muther, and in my latest book, Equity in the Civil Law Tradition. At Sciences Po, I intend to pursue a similar line of inquiry. First, I want to investigate exactly how French arbitration law has influenced the development of arbitration law and practice in Brazil. I am also interested — viewing the matter from the reverse perspective — in determining which features of French arbitration law are most "marketable"abroad and thus more easily "exportable."
I very much look forward to working with the faculty at Sciences Po, who have all been very kind and hospitable to me during these first weeks of the academic year, with the hope of bringing both universities closer together in the future.
