Interview with Linda VECGAILE, PhD candidate in Political and Social Sciences

Linda VECGAILE

Linda VECGAILE, PhD candidate in Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute :

“CIVICA is an amazing initiative to promote inter-university and cross-national mobility and knowledge exchange…”

Could you please shortly introduce yourself and tell us more about your area of research?

I am a PhD candidate at the European University Institute, Department of Political and Social Sciences, and I am interested in questions related to gender inequality in labour markets. My current research focuses on estimating wage returns to birth postponement within diverse social and institutional contexts.

You are one of the first users of the CIVICA ESR Courses Catalogue. What has motivated you to participate in the CIVICA program and to register for the “Event History Analysis” class at Sciences Po?

Apart from being generally passionate about learning new statistical methods, Event History Analysis is especially handy when you have longitudinal data and analyse various social and economic phenomena such as the probability of occurrence of births, family formation and dissolution, unemployment and promotion and alike. Besides, CIVICA is an amazing initiative to promote inter-university and cross-national mobility and knowledge exchange. It is a chance not only to learn new subjects at such excellent universities as Sciences Po but also build contacts with professors and students with similar interests outside your university setting.

What was your overall experience with this class?

I had a wonderful experience. Prof. Sukriti Issar presented a very well structured course which included a coherent overview of Event History Analysis balanced by practical application of theory in the form of carefully tailored problem sets as well as by encouraging student participation all through the course.

Based on your experience, would you recommend other Early Stage Researchers to attend CIVICA courses, seminars or workshops at other CIVICA partner universities? Why?

I definitely recommend it. CIVICA offers a unique opportunity to meet and learn from the experts of various fields from world-renowned higher education institutions across Europe.
