Apur publishes our students’ benchmark online

For their CAPSTONE in partnership with Apur, five students from the Master in Governing Ecological Transitions in European Cities (GETEC) have developed a benchmark based on fifteen urban agriculture projects in France, Europe and North America. Apur has just published their study.

Jeanne Bakker, Louisa Lausch, Lise Legrandois, Clémence Muzette et Clovis Solo studied urban agriculture projects located in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, London, Rotterdam, Vienna, Montreal, New York and some French cities.

This benchmark study illustrates the diversity of forms of urban agriculture which, as well as providing food, is a powerful lever for social cohesion, integration and environmental education. Urban farms bring more nature into the city and introduce a new aesthetic into the urban landscape. They also address environmental challenges by reintroducing biodiversity into the urban environment and creating a cool island effect. Finally, urban agriculture helps cast a spotlight on problems of food insecurity, a major issue for cities. And while their potential for feeding populations is as yet relatively low, urban farms are nonetheless a tool for making cities more resilient, whether in the open air, on a rooftop, underground, indoors or even on the water.
