The Seoul study trip report is available!

THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF THE master Governing the Large Metropolis WENT TO SEoul IN SOUTH KOREA, FROM 12 TO 19 JANUARY 2020, FOR THE TRADITIONAL STUDY TRIP TO A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL METROPOLIS. THEIR STUDY TRIP REPORT IS NOW AVAILABLE.

With a metropolitan area of nearly 25 million people housing about half of the total South Korean population, the city alone represents about half of the country’s GDP: students were immersed in a growing country, which was able to recover in a spectacular way from the war that hindered it (1950 – 1953), to find itself today in a position of model for many states in the world. Its metropolis is logically the reflection of it: symbol of modernity and technological innovation to rise in the Asian regional competition and attract investors and activities in its territory, through ambitious urban projects and infrastructure.

The trip, carried out in the form of a collective inquiry, had the ambition to question the dimension of the «smart city» that is rather omnipresent in the speeches and programs of the metropolis. What does "smart" mean at the scale of such a metropolitan territory? How to reconcile this concept with that of governance? Territorial balance and social inclusion?
