Learning expedition to Amman in Jordan
>From March 17 to 22 2023, the students from the Master Governing the Large Metropolis (GLM) went to Amman for their annual learning expedition. Amman is the largest city of Jordan and the Levant and is one of the most popular locations in the Arab world. The theme of the trip was "cities adapting to new challenges".
Amman has experienced an economic, cultural, and urban growth during the 2010s and is facing new challenges such as influx of refugees and displaced persons, water scarcity, housing affordability, and transport connectivity.
The aim of this trip was to discover how the city is transforming and adapting to these challenges, what are the policy instruments or political interventions put in place, and how are local institutions and everyday life changing in response.
The students met with public and private stakeholders and visited strategic institutions including:
Greater Amman Municipality: Presentation and Q&A with representatives from Transportation, the Urban Observatory, Planning, Engineering, Smart Cities.
German Jordanian University - School of Architecture & Built Environment : Pr Rami Daher, Associate Professor of Architecture at GJU and Co-Founder / CEO of TURATH : Architecture and Urban Design Consultants and Pr Nabil Abu-Dayyeh, Associate Professor of Architecture at GJU
SCADA Center (water quality monitoring center, from Miyahuna)
Presentation and Q&A session with engineers from Miyahuna Water
Meeting with the Mayor of Zarqa Municipality, His Excellency Mayor Emad al-Momani
Meeting with the American Center of Research (ACOR) : Jehad Haron, Associate Director for Projects and John Shearman, Chief of party of the Sustainable Cultural Heritage through Engagement of Local Communities Project (SCHEP)
Presentation and Q&A session with the Urban Mobility and Spatial Justice of Amman Research Team, M. Ahmad Zayed.
