The STU students at the discovery of Nantes

THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF THE Master REGIONAL AND URBAN STRATEGY (STU) WERE IN STUDY TRIP IN NANTES FROM 31 MAY TO 2 juNE, 2021.

Every year, STU Master’s students make their first study trip to a French city. The students, supervised by the pedagogical team of the Master, carry out a collective survey on the issues of the visited territory, through readings and preliminary analyses, visits (of sites, urban projects or facilities) and meetings (with elected officials, public and private operators, companies, associative actors representing civil society or inhabitants).

For 2021, the choice of the metropolis of Nantes, beyond the simple observation of the territorial attractiveness, is first of all due to the desire to explore a mode of governance that will be asked whether or not it makes model, at different scales. In addition, Nantes has distinguished itself over the past twenty years by an urban action widely recognized at international and national levels, with major urban renewal projects particularly “located”, in the sense of a strong cultural anchorage. Finally, the third issue of the trip was, beyond these emblematic manifestations of a “Nantes-style” urban planning, to try to examine the margins, the background and the challenges, especially at a time when the health crisis and its powerful territorial effects are intensifying issues and controversies about the making, management and governance of sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities.
