Can Web3 restore trust online?
On December 1, the McCourt Institute will hold its third event in the “Web3 &” series. The panel discussion will gather various tech experts, media experts as well as social scientists to decrypt the issues at hand and discuss the possible solutions that Web3 can represent in restoring trust in online content.
Speakers:
- Dominique Boullier, Sociologist, Professor at Sciences Po
- Louis-Victor de Franssu, CEO, Tremau
- Claire Balva, co-founder, Blockchain Partner
- Iryna Volnytska, President of the SET (Science, Entrepreneurship, Technology) University
- Leïla Mörch, Senior Program Manager, Project Liberty (moderator).
How might content moderation – or trust and safety, more broadly – work in a Web3 environment where the centralized powers of Big Tech are no longer relevant, and individuals can set the terms for how their data and content are accessed and managed? Web3 is a “trustless” technology: Smart contracts can be established to execute functions when certain criteria are met, meaning policies can be fully encoded into a given application. Can moderation policies be governed by self-executing script, or must there always be a human element to ensure the needs of users are met?
The event is open in-person to Sciences Po students and external guests and will be live streamed on the McCourt Institute website publicly.
