Research and Education: Pillars of The European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition's Project

Launched in November 2020 and hosted by the School of Public Affairs and the Paris School of International Affairs, the European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition at Sciences Po has initiated several exciting efforts under the leadership of the Chairholder Prof. Shiv Someshwar.

Research is a key effort area. Territorial economic and social inclusion, nature-based climate solutions and inclusive and sustainable food systems are some of the areas of research. Public events throughout the academic year will further highlight research findings.

Earlier this year, the Chair launched the Independent Task Force on Creative Climate Action—a diverse group of thinkers and practitioners who are focusing on pragmatic issues of "how to unlock action" that adhere to principles of global equity and sustainability. The report of the Task Force will highlight time-bound measures for likely consideration at the 2022 Bali Summit of G-20 leaders.

Advancing education on sustainability issues is another key effort area. Several activities are underway to accelerate students’ involvement in sustainable development and climate outside of their formal courses. These include Students Blog @ the Chair,  podcasts by students, an essay competition and Chair and Students’ Roundtables.

The Chair has hosted and participated in several events. In April of this year, along with Columbia University’ SIPA and Earth Institute/Climate School, a roundtable on the “Political economy of implementing a socially inclusive zero carbon goal” was organised. More recently, the Chair participated in IDDRI’s conference on Planetary Governance and in PSIA’s conference on the Common Good.

The first international conference of the Chair is scheduled for November 29 at Sciences Po. "How to Organise Trade-Offs to Conserve Biodiversity and Advance Development Equity?" is the topic. Read more and register here!

The Chair is sponsored by the European Investment Bank, Hermès International and HSBC
