The Great Transition: Business Is No Longer “Business As Usual”
On 22 January 2020, the School of Management and Innovation held the final session of its core course, The Great Transition, during which 12 finalist groups presented their projects in front of a jury.
The purpose of this course, common for all students of the School of Management and Innovation, is to instill, from the very start of their master’s programmes, a strong awareness of the world’s most pressing contemporary issues. "As of now, business is no longer 'business as usual'", stated Marie-Laure Djelic, Dean of the school and one of the professors of the course. Through this course, students are encouraged to find innovative solutions that pertain to this "great transition", which is "an ecological one, a political one, a sociological and a technological one." The issues identified for the 2019 edition of the course were regrouped into the following categories:
- Climate Change & Climate Justice
- Virtuality and Loneliness
- Biodiversity, Food and Circularity
- Artificial Intelligence and Natural Stupidity
- Inequalities, Poverty and Education
- Insetting - Responsibility and Sustainability by Design
In this course, students are divided into groups of 3 to 6 to work on semester-long projects pertaining to these issues. In total, 106 projects were in competition - 12 of which made it to the final round.
Projects included solutions to reducing plastic waste in the beauty industry, educational and ethical vegetable gardens in primary schools, a platform that facilitates communication between local food producers and restaurants, an app that helps reduce digital pollution, an event platforms for youths who experience loneliness, a reality TV show that aimed to raise awareness on individuals’ carbon footprint, and more.
