Meet the Graduates 2024: Ana Paula Ríos Camarena Suárez del Real

Ana Paula Rios Camarena Suarez del Real in front of Sciences Po, in Paris

Ana Paula Ríos Camarena Suárez del Real is a recent graduate from Sciences Po in International Governance and Diplomacy and an Advanced Certification in Gender Studies awardee. In this interview, she tells us more about her international studies, from Mexico City, to Paris, passing by the Sciences Po European-Franco-German campus located in Nancy and the University of Vienna in Austria.

Why did you choose to pursue the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies in addition to your Master's Programme?

I have always considered myself a feminist, and I wanted to bring my engagement to the feminist cause to my academic background. I believe it gives me more legitimacy when engaging with feminist academics and non-governmental organisations.

Have you been particularly influenced by any course?

Yes, during my time at the University of Vienna, my class on "Practices and Methods of Intersectionality" was the most interesting one: we learned with real-life scenarios how, in politics and law, there is an incompatibility between the law and the "gender positive" image the Austrian government tries to give in its policies, especially in the domain of migration and care work. The final project for this course consisted in presenting real-life scenarios, looking into gender discrimination by the State in Europe.

What would be your best memory from your time  at Sciences Po?

I would not be able to find just one best memory, but it would definitely be about the friends I made during my five years in Sciences Po. I would dare to say one of the best memories was being invited to a conference by Hertie School in Berlin in the domain of international cooperation between the European Union and Latin America. I had the opportunity to get to know amazing scholars and experts on the topic, along with other students who are willing to construct bridges between both regions. It was a pleasure to share my knowledge and experiences representing my country!

Is there any advice you would give to future graduates?

Raise your voice for those who can't, and do not be afraid to stick to your ideals.

What is next for you?

For the time being, I am currently an intern at TMP Climate, but I am looking for a job in the field of environment, public policies or AI regulation, of course with a gender lens. I am willing to stay in France or Europe, while continuing to gain knowledge on gender-related topics, especially international cooperation. My dream final destination would be Berlin, working in the creation of projects for international cooperation in the field of women's rights in an non-governmental organisation.
