Meet the Graduates 2024: Carolina Bergstein

While she was completing her undergraduate studies in Brazil, Carolina Bergstein, decided to do an exchange semester in a French university: she flew to the city of Poitiers which is home to Sciences Po’s campus focusing on Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and the Caribbean. This is where she first encountered gender studies. A few years later, she graduated from the Sciences Po School of International Affairs’ with a master in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action and the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies.

What led you to pursue courses in gender studies?

During my exchange programme at the Poitiers campus of Sciences Po I had a course on the sociology of gender, titled "Les grandes questions sociologiques : le genre", taught by Professor Alexandre Jaunait. That was really a game-changer in my academic path and in the possibilities I saw for my professional future. After this class I was sure I wanted to work with gender issues and, therefore, that I had to deepen my knowledge of the subject. Once I applied for my master in Human Rights I learned about the existence of the Advanced Certification in Gender Studies. Throughout my master’ programme I took several courses related to gender, so when the date came to apply for the Certification, I chose to pursue it. It will be an important way of attesting to my knowledge and interest in gender studies, possibly opening professional opportunities in the field.

What one-sentence advice would you give to the next cohorts?

Choose the courses that move you and challenge you to deepen your knowledge of gender. The Advanced Certification will come as a consequence.

What is next for you?

I am currently doing an internship in a French non-governmental organisation called Association Olympe, which offers free-of-charge juridical orientation to women victims of domestic violence with a specific focus on migrant women. So I would say that I am already applying what I have learned in my gender courses and seeing how it is done in practice. After my internship, I will move back to Brazil and intend to work for women's rights protection from there.
