Questions of method: national historiography in debate
Reflection on historians' methods and the implications of their different approaches has always been at the heart of historiographical debate. For at least the last two decades, voices have been raised against a certain “methodological nationalism” that overemphasized the national dimension of history and the differences between the historical developments of different states, giving preference instead to the transnational approach or micro-historical analysis. Positioning in this debate certainly depends on the fields of analysis, but it also conditions to a certain extent the orientation of research results.
Our seminar will discuss these biases, which form the basis of our analyses, by placing them in a broader historiographical debate. It will examine the various national historiographical traditions in the light of comparatism, while questioning the undertones of approaches favoring, for example, the analysis of transnational circulations or the dynamics of individual actors.
What role do these methodological questions play in our research work? And how can we reconcile historiographical positioning with the concrete imperatives of the historian's work?
These methodological questions will be discussed by seminar participants, based on the work presented by invited speakers.
The choice of speakers and the preparation of the sessions will be carried out by an organizing team in which doctoral students from the Centre d'histoire as well as “established” researchers will participate, favoring broad themes and general methodological questions, thus going beyond the narrow framework of empirical studies.
