Bio :

Alexandre Dumont is senior scientist at the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and Gynaecologist-Obstetrician in a Health Centre in France.  After being trained as a physician specialized in Obstetrics and Gynaecolgy, Alexandre Dumont pursued a PhD training in Paris, and a post-doc at the Research Institute of Mother and Child Saint-Justine Hospital in Montreal, Canada. In 2004, he joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Montreal as full time Professor, then in 2008 he moved to IRD to join the UMR 196 team (CEPED). My research activity was consistently focused on maternal and perinatal health in low- and middle income countries, first investigating maternal mortality, then exploring the determinants of caesarean sections, and developing interventions to reduce unnecessary caesarean sections.  His current activity focuses on a program based on clinical audit and decision-analysis tool in referral hospitals in Argentina, Thailand, Vietnam and Burkina Faso. 

Research team, led by Alexandre Dumont, won the first €1 million Horizon Birth Day Prize from the European Commission for their work that has cut the number of deaths of new mothers in hospitals in Mali and Senegal by as much as a third.
