Matthew Evangelista

Matthew Evangelista is President White Professor of History and Political Science in the Department of Government at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA, where he teaches courses in international and comparative politics.  He has served as director of Cornell’s Judith Reppy Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies from 2002 to 2008 and again since 2015, and as chair of the Department of Government from 2008 to 2011.

Professor Evangelista is the author of five books: Innovation and the Arms Race (1988); Unarmed Forces: The Transnational Movement to End the Cold War (1999); The Chechen Wars: Will Russia Go the Way of the Soviet Union? (2002); Law, Ethics, and the War on Terror (2008); and Gender, Nationalism, and War: Conflict on the Movie Screen (2011).  He has edited several volumes, including, most recently (with Henry Shue), The American Way of Bombing: Changing Ethical and Legal Norms, from Flying Fortresses to Drones (2014).
