Hasyim, Yusuf
Yusuf Hasyim (born on 3 August 1929), was the son of Hasyim Asyari, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Yusuf Hasyim was the head of the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java, and a leader of NU. He was the head of Banser at the time of the coup attempt by the 30 September Movement in 1965 and was actively involved in arresting suspected members and sympathisers of the Indonesian Communist Party. He openly admitted to having killed suspected communists himself in the 1965-66 period. From the 1960s onwards, he was active in speaking out against communism. In 2006, he was part of a group of anti-communists who petitioned the Constitutional Court to declare unconstitutional the 2004 Law on the Formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He died from illness on 15 January, 2007.
