Born in 1907, U Nu became the leader of the Rangoon University Students’ Union (RUSU) in 1935 and then became an active member of the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL) in the first years of Burma’s independence. Prime Minister from 1948-58, and then 1960-62, he was deposed by General Ne Win and imprisoned until 1966. Exiled to Thailand (1969-73), the USA (1973-74) and then India (1974-80), he came back to Burma with the 1980 general amnesty. Though part of the 1988 mass movement, he did not manage to recoup his leadership and died in Rangoon in 1995.
