Hub Associate Expert on Social Media Platforms weaponizing US Law against national regulations

Camille Grenier, one of the PSIA Tech & Global Affairs Innovation Hub, recently published an article in The Conversation co-authored with University of Virginia research associate Yasmin Curzi de Mendonça, exploring how social media platforms are increasingly leveraging the extraterritoriality of US law to power through boundaries set by national legislation.

Building upon an analysis of recent lawsuits initiated by X (former Twitter) and by Trump Media & Technology Group alongside Rumble, the authors explore how, beyond lobbying efforts to defeat or loosen digital national legislative efforts, Big Tech companies increasingly combine political and corporate power attempting to challenge these regulations once they are adopted in front of U.S. courts.

The cases exemplify a growing trend in which U.S. political and corporate actors attempt to undermine foreign regulatory authority by pressing the case that domestic U.S. law and corporate protections should take precedence over sovereign policies globally.
