Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya ran to become Belarus president in 2020 when her husband, Sergei Tikhanovsky, was imprisoned for his opposition to the Belarus regime. She contested the re-election of Lukashenko in the face of strong evidence of electoral fraud. A former professor and translator of English, Tikhanovskaya is now a refugee in Lithuania where she leads the Belarusian democratic opposition.
