Managing New Economic Statecraft: Can International Institutions Play a Role?

About this event

14 May 2024 from 11:00 until 12:30

Sciences Po - 1 pl. Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin

Organized by

Paris School of International Affairs & Jacques Delors Institute

The rise of 'new economic statecraft', which refers to a state intervention in trade and investment for foreign policy reasons, is increasingly threatening the stability of the global economic system. This approach can lead to market uncertainty, trade tensions, and retaliatory measures, undermining the principles of free trade and open markets. Additionally, the politicization of economic decisions risks fragmenting international cooperation and weakening institutions vital for maintaining global economic stability.

Professor Vinod Aggarwal will present the topic by drawing upon sector-specific examples and the use of bilateral and multilateral frameworks. An interactive discussion with the audience will follow to explore institutional strategies that have proven effective to manage economic statecraft and to limit its potential negative impacts.

This event is co-organized by PSIA and the Jacques Delors Institute.
